Flinn Reeves Lecture – Unveiling Creativity: The Artistic Journey of Christo and Jeanne-Claude

The Flinn Gallery is pleased to welcome Danielle Ogden, Artistic Director of the Newport Art Museum as this year’s guest speaker. This talk will explore the groundbreaking work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, placing their iconic large-scale environmental art within the broader art historical contexts of their time.
Twenty years ago, the New York City public was mesmerized by an unforgettable large-scale public installation which, over the course of two weeks in February 2005, totally transformed Central Park. Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s The Gates was comprised of 23 miles of pathways lined by 7,502 Shinto-inspired porticoes adorned with flowing saffron-colored fabric. Ogden will discuss the legacy and enduring impact of Christo and his wife and collaborator Jeanne-Claude who, over their decades-long artistic collaboration, have transcended traditional boundaries, reshaping public perceptions of art, space and the environment. She will place the couple’s artistic production within the broader historical context of their time, highlighting the artists and movements they influenced and revealing the continuing impact of their visionary work on contemporary art today.
Danielle Ogden brings over seventeen years of experience in academia and museum work. She has served as an Adjunct Professor at Fairfield University, where she taught Modern Art and the History, Theory, and Practice of Museums. From 2013 to 2018, Danielle was the Associate Director of Academic Programs and Museum Specialist in Adult Learning at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, CT. Prior to that, she played a key role in the launch of the National Gallery Singapore as Senior Manager of Adult Learning and Access Programs.
Danielle’s expertise in leading, designing, and facilitating cross-disciplinary, inquiry-based programs spans several prominent institutions, including the Harvard University Art Museums, The British National Trust, the Museum of Contemporary Art Westport (formally Westport Arts Center), and the Newport Restoration Foundation. She is currently the Artistic Director of the Newport Art Museum.
Danielle holds an M.A. in Art History and Museum Studies from Boston University and an Ed.M. in Education from Harvard University.
