Pat Reeves Annual Flinn Legacy Lecture: Mary Cassatt: American Tastemaker with Laura D. Corey, Ph.D., from the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Flinn Gallery welcomes Laura D. Corey, Ph.D., from the Metropolitan Museum of Art for its first Pat Reeves Annual Flinn Legacy Lecture. Dr. Corey has published and lectured extensively both in the U.S. and abroad on the topic of Mary Cassatt’s career as an advisor to American collectors.
The Pat Reeves Annual Flinn Gallery Legacy Lecture is made possible by a bequest from longtime Flinn Committee member, Pat Reeves. We have established the lectures to be held annually in her honor. The Legacy Fund is being used to fund the annual lectures and the Flinn Gallery archival projects.
Best known as an Impressionist painter and printmaker, Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was also a prolific advisor who had a hand in exporting over a thousand works of art from Europe to the United States. She had benefited from formative experiences studying art first-hand in Europe and became a tireless advocate for establishing a tradition of collecting and exhibiting fine art in her home country. Over the course of half a century, she worked with more than a dozen collectors, most notably the Havemeyers of New York and Greenwich, but also individuals and museums along the eastern seaboard and as far west as Chicago to acquire masterpieces of Impressionist and Old Master painting, as well as Japanese prints, Persian ceramics, medieval sculpture, and more, making an indelible impact on the development of American taste that continues to resonate today.
Laura D. Corey is Senior Researcher and Project Manager for Curatorial, Conservation, and Science Initiatives in the Director’s Office of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she was also co-curator of the Museum’s 150th-anniversary exhibition, Making The Met: 1870–2020.
